Beverly’s interest in the arts began in the 70s which led her to teaching secondary school art in Melbourne. Being interested in business and things creative Beverly spent the next 10 years working in both retail and wholesale fashion in Victoria.
It was not until moving to Queensland in the late 90s that she returned to art, now as a student. Ten years later her work reflects this journey.
Having just left Melbourne her earlier work was influenced by city living, angular, urban in colour and shape. Her latest works are more organic, now influenced by and reflecting the diversity of shapes, colour and textures of the city, country and coastal regions where she has lived during her life.
“Just as life and the world around is a contradiction, this diversity can be seen in my recent work. Much of my inspiration comes from what is rather that what I see. I am always looking for forms and textures that represent the universal aspects of life, hoping to transform them into an image of my own.”
“Much of my work begins with a texture, it could be from nature or an everyday object around me. When I begin to apply the first layer of texture to my work there is an emotion evoked and this is interpreted by the addition of colour and light. Rarely does the finished painting resemble my first intention. For me the joy of painting is more in the process than it is in the outcome.”
“I don’t mind that the viewers sometimes interpret some of my organic forms as representing nature or even an abstract landscape even though often that is not my intention. My work is not intended to give the viewer all the answers I just want them to ask the questions.”
